It is never too late, so don’t give up…
“Don’t Give Up!”
“Don’t wait until you are 29 like me, but if you do, that’s okay, because some people never find it”- That’s what an actor said in a recent viral video encouraging people to follow their desires. I looooved the message, except for that one remark. “Don’t wait until you are 29—” as if we are ancient by then. It’s true that age is halfway to retirement and those that decide to live their lives the way they want as soon as they are 18-25 may seem like they are getting more out of life than the ones who started later, but even then, they will have their lows in life as well, maybe later.
Benjamin Franklin said “Some people die at 25 and aren’t buried until they are 75”. We give up on our dreams by a certain age based on a scale given to us by other people’s opinions, but don’t give up/
Think about nature. Nature has cycles but not due dates. A flower doesn’t sit in a garden and wonder why the others are blooming faster than themselves. They all unfold beautifully in their own timing. Nature is always arriving and so are we.
Processes take time.
It is safe to allow ourselves time to unfold when the world is telling us it is not, as long as we don’t give up.
We are all doing the best we can with what we have. Take your time. Be gentle with yourself. Quiet the mind when it tells you “It’s too late to follow that dream”. Start researching people who are where you want to be, and you will encounter people who started at your age or later. You will find 80 year old runway models, 60 year old professional dancers, you will find out it took Gary Vaynerchuk, the top social media master with many worshipping followers, 20 years of hard work as to get to where he is.
Stop telling yourself it’s too late. Stop pulling that card. When other people tell you it’s too late, or not probable, or not for you–and they will, and it will likely come from people closest to you–you stand your ground. You don’t need to argue. Let’s take famous actor Robert Downey Jr’s advice: “Listen, smile, agree. And then, do whatever the fuck you were gonna do anyway”.
This life is yours. Whether you are 16 years old, 21, 35, or 50. You still have time. Your heart is still beating. You have desires and talents that are yet to be fulfilled. Do you want to go to the grave with them or do you want to set the limits down, and see what you’re capable of?
